The Colorado Health Care Association recently bestowed two of its 2013 Spotlight on Excellence Awards on associates at Briarwood Health Care Center in Denver.
COHCA named Nikki Brouhard as its Business Manager of the Year and Moises Alvarez as its Certified Nursing Assistant of the Year.
The association presented the awards during its annual banquet in Denver on Sept. 18.
Brouhard goes beyond her job duties to help residents and their families navigate the jungle of health care forms and apply for needed financial aid.
"She loves to work with the families and residents here, providing comfort and support when so many of us are confused and upset about finances," shared one resident. "So many of us are stressed, our families are stressed and we are ill on top of everything else."
Another resident added, "She not only helps us with our money, but she is also our friend."
Brouhard has gone out of her way to help residents move and decorate their rooms. She even helped one resident organize and put on an estate sale, sitting at the table and overseeing the event on a weekend.
"It is nice to be recognized for all the hard work that we do each day," said Brouhard. "It is rewarding to assist families and residents who are going through a tough time in their life. I have always enjoyed helping others and believe it's a calling."
Alvarez, a CNA for more than 20 years, was also praised for his personal rapport with patients, as well as his consistently positive attitude and attention to detail.
"It's the little things that he does for each patient on a daily basis that make him special," said Hollie Hoyle, executive director at Briarwood Health Care Center. "An extra pillow, a snack from the store, changing the channel or just visiting, he is always there when needed."
"Winning this award is the best thing that has happened in my CNA career," said Alvarez. "I like to help residents. I like being here at Briarwood Health Care Center and like my peers. When I work taking care of my residents, I do this out of kindness of my heart — I don't do it for something in return."
